Throughout our oral histories, many interviewees shared fond childhood memories of the Kresge’s store at St. Clair and Vaughan. From grilled cheese sandwiches with friends to the squeaky wooden floors, the old Kresge’s had a place in many hearts!

You can now relive the music and memories of browsing Kresge’s by exploring this online collection of background or “elevator” music, which was played in Kresge’s stores across the US and Canada.

I recently discovered this amazing resource on the Internet Archive, which hosts many public domain collections from a wide range of media enthusiasts. It mostly features audio cassettes from the 1980s and 1990s, but also includes much earlier recordings and film from the 1940s - 1970s! Vinyl records were cleaned carefully, recorded as digital files, and then run through an audio processor to remove any clicks or noise.

The music and films of Kresge’s are now available for all to listen and reminisce about the bustling Kresge’s experience. Highlights include a large selection of Christmas background music, and 1940’s training videos explaining the ABC’s of friendly service!

You can listen to more recollections of the St. Clair West Kresge’s in our featured story here:
