Oakwood Stadium and Stock Car Racing
One of our committee members found a wonderful online resource called “Yesterday’s Speedways”, which documents the history of motorsports in Ontario. It includes fascinating information about stock car racing at our own Oakwood Stadium in the 1950s. The stadium was located near Oakwood and St Clair, at Alberta Ave, where the No Frills now stands.
“Back in 1951, two young men began promoting Stock Car racing in the city of Toronto…. These two men were Joe Cappy and Norm Smith, the same two men who in 1952, purchased and built the legendary ¼ mile oval we all know and love, Pinecrest Speedway.”
The site also features black and white photographs of the cars and races at the stadium, as well as the cover of the 1951 official program for Oakwood Stadium! We would love to hear your memories of events at the stadium in the comments below.
Many thanks to Rick Sharples of Yesterday’s Speedways for permission to feature his site! Read more about Oakwood Stadium here.
